  7. Thank you for all the comments. Class two, what is our curriculum really providing Gen Z? Are students engaged enough in secondary school? Is secondary education a right or privilege? The debate was off the chain!

  8. I am coming back from out of town, and just heard about the problem in Chicago with violence and students scared to go to school. Do you think Memphis could be that extreme one day?

  9. I definitely think that Memphis can end up being a potential Chicago. I've seen parents having to come to the school to get their children's work because they have received threats and are in fear of being attacked while at school. There have been several recent fights involving numerous students lately. If nothing is done, the situation is going to worsen. Everything that currently is being done, is obviously not working.

  10. I did find Class 1 to be very informative. I'm currently not teaching and I know that I will have a task ahead of me, but I do feel that the various learning activities that we do on Saturdays will help me in class once I start teaching. I also like the blog activity although I've never blogged, but it has been interesting working on the assignment and reading students' responses.

  11. I found class one to be very informative and interactive. I have always admired the course that our classes have taken. There is never a dull moment and that is good. There is always a "thing that make you go hmmmm" and class one was that for me. I think that coming up with more creative ways to teach the students that are apart of generation z is a great idea. All aspects of teaching don't have to change but incorporating new things is wonderful and I believe will engage the students that we teach and will teach.

  12. I enjoyed the lesson on Generation Z as well, and I don't think I will always be open for new ways to understand and educate these students. I also feel that many students here are probably already scared to come to school, due to bullying, etc. I do feel that there is going to have to be some type of radical change/intervention if we want to prevent Memphis from becoming a scary place for students to go to school.

  13. Generation Z was a great lesson! There are so many ways to teach students. Fun and creative ways to educate students of generation Z makes learning for them so much better. Using various ideas and techniques to help students learn and retain information makes it a whole lot easier on the students as well as the teacher.

  14. In class one, I learned that the power of rap lyrics, particularly those lyrics that are current to the generation of students we teacher are in tune with. I feel like most of my cohortees; that there is never a dull moment when it involves Dr. Mayfield and Cohort VIII. As far as having the ability and talent to teach generation z, I am on board and ready for the challenge. I used the lyrics written by Drake in class later the folowing week. Not only did my students love it, but one of my teammates was impressed as well. Thanks Dr. Mayfield!

  15. I have not heard exactly what is occurring in Chicago, but I do think that Memphis is a city where students who attend some inner city schools already are dealing with violence in the school and are afraid. Our city is a lot smaller than Chicago and to have as many incidents as we do of violence in schools rates us up there with a metropolitan city such as Chicago; in turn paining a more negative picture of Memphis.

  16. The issues that secondary students face are acceptance. I placed an acne web link on page because I have students who suffer from acne in 7th grade and are ridiculed for that. I felt that they may need more information on how to help deal with acne as well as treat it.
